A “Trump Account,” officially known as a 530A IRA, is a new program established by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for parents and others to invest money for their children for retirement.
Parents can open these accounts for any child under the age of 18 at any time. All that is needed is your child’s Social Security number, date of birth, and address. 530A IRAs offer tax-deferred growth with investments in qualified low-fee U.S stock index funds (mutual funds or ETFs), providing broad market exposure and the ability to compound over the long term.
To kick off the new program, the Federal Government will fund accounts with a one-time $1,000 seed contribution for eligible U.S. citizen children born between Jan. 1, 2025 and Dec. 31, 2028. The Treasury Department is working on a schedule to determine when these contributions will occur in the near future.Annual contributions from all non-federal sources are capped at $5,000 per child. Employers are also eligible to contribute to the accounts of their employees’ children as a benefit.
Micron’s Promise
With Micron constructing two fabrication plants in Central New York, they have just announced a plan to invest up to $250 million in these accounts who reside in areas where Micron operates. Micron stated this initiative is to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America.
Each child will receive a one time deposit of $250 from Micron, as well as an employee matching benefit for contributions up to $1,000 for its 10,000 employees.
Eligibility:
- Your child must live in one of the following counties: Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, or Oswego.
- The child must have an existing Trump account.
- The child must be under the age of 18.
If every child meeting these requirements were to have a Trump account open for them, this would equal about $40 million in investments towards the children of Central New York. That being said, it is highly unlikely that such a large percentage of parents will open such accounts. Other investments will occur in California, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Texas, and Virginia, where Micron also operates.
What if my Child Doesn’t Have a Trump Account Open Now?
Do not worry – you still have time. These distributions are not available yet. Parents can still open a 530A IRA for their children and can sign up to receive information about the program and future contributions through Micron’s website.
